That was largely expenses in connection with the preparation of the women's book, a publication prepared and compiled by a number of ladies well known in connection with the charitable and other work done by the Women's Council, and other women's work done in the country.

So far as that work in Canada was concerned, it was entirely voluntary, was it not ?

There were some travelling expenses, printing, typewriting and editorial work. Allowances were also made to quite a number of the ladies who were not in a position, owing to financial circumstances, to devote their time to the work gratuitously. Much of the work was gratuitously done, and the general management was gratuitous.

I am not finding fault with the gratuities to the ladies, but, speaking under correction, the work in my own province was done gratuitously.

I could not say who received gratuities or who did not. A good deal of the work was done by Miss Wilson, who is secretary to the Women's Council, and who acted aa editor and compiler. She was paid for her services.

Hon. Mr. PRIOR.

The hon. minister stated that the work done by Mr. Stuart was satisfactory. I am sorry to say that Mr. Stuart did not seem to think that the action of the hon. minister's colleague (the Minister of Public Works) was very satisfactory to him. I remember that a few months ago Mr. Stuart complained very bitterly about the treatment he received from the Minister of Public Works, stating to friends, and also to correspondents, that he had been behaved to most shabbily, and asked to do work derogatory to a man in his position. Does the hon. gentleman know of any complaints of Mr. Stuart, or was there any truth in the statements made to me ?

I was just saying to my colleague that I never had more trouble with a staff than with this one in Paris. A good many of the employees, not all, but a certain number, seemed to think that they nad gone to Paris on a holiday.

No, it is not correct; because there was a great deal of work to do. I do not wish to apply these remarks to Mr. Stuart. I do not remember treating him or any other employee in an improper way. I made them work as I worked myself. I know some of them did not like it, and I was obliged to send some of them home. I felt that Canada had a right to be represented by men who would keep sober and work, and would be on the spot when explanations were asked for.

Mr. HENDERSON.

I desire to ask the minister a question with reference to an article appearing in to-day's Montreall Gazette, which reads :

The Hon. Sidney Fisher, Minister of Agriculture, is having a unique map of the province of Quebec prepared for the Pan-American exposition. It will contain the physical features, forests, possible canoe trips, routes by the early missionaries, and by Champlain, and by other early French explorers, Hudson Bay forts, ancient Indian village sites, modern Indian reserves, regions of fish and game preserves-

-and so on. Is it the intention that Quebec shall be the only province mapped out in

that way for the Buffalo exposition, or may we expect that for the whole Dominion we shall have similar information furnished '!

The MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, I have been requested, in connection with the ethnological exhibit at Buffalo, to assist to the extent of preparing a map for Quebec, as the Ontario government is preparing a map for that province in the same way. No arrangements have yet been made, and 1 have not given any orders in regard to the matter.

ADJOURNMENT-VISIT OF THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CORNWALL AND YORK.

The MINISTER OF MARINE AND FISHERIES (Hon. Sir Louis Davies) moved the adjournment of the House.

Edward Gawler Prior

Conservative (1867-1942)

Hon. Mr. PRIOR.

I wish to draw the attention of the government to an item which appears in the government's organ, the Globe, of Toronto :

It is learned to-night from an official source that the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall have consented to go as far as Vancouver, but their trip west must necessarily be hurried, as their Royal Highnesses will he able to spend only a month in Canada.

The item says that their Highnesses will go as far as Vancouver. It is noticeable that the press all over this country, when speaking of British Columbia, always mention Vancouver as the most westerly city of the Dominion I wish to say that there is another city further west than Vancouver and of just as much importance, and more, for it is the capital of British Columbia and the seat of the greatest wealth by far of any city in the province. But it was not that point I rose to speak about. I desire to ask whether the government have any official information as to whether their Royal Highnesses had agreed to go to the Pacific coast or not, and whether they would go to Victoria.
