Mr. TARTE.
Mr. WTALLACE.
Another item might be taken while we are looking over this contract.
Steam service fortnightly between St. John and Liverpool, Great Britain, during the winter season of 1901-2, not less than ten round trips, $20,000.
This vote is practically used iu case of need to supplement the previous vote.
Mr. WALLACE.
Has it been used ?
It will probably be used the coming year, but not this year.
Mr. BORDEN (Halifax).
Is there any contract with any particular company who get this amount ?
No.
Mr. BORDEN (Halifax).
It will be used to enable the same contractors to perform the service in the winter.
Yes. We have varied the old form of that contract. We give a larger subsidy to the better boat. If they give us a superior boat they get a larger subsidy, and it may amount therefore to a little more than $150,000. One cannot tell until the close of the year what the full amount will be, but I expect the two votes will enable us to pay it all.
Mr. WALLACE.
This $20,000 will only apply to the winter months ?
Exactly. For a long time these vessels have made a demand for an additional sum owing to the delay, and they allege the increased insurance caused by calling at Halifax and then at St. John makes it more expensive than if they sailed from the one port alone.
Mr. BORDEN (Halifax).
Therefore the $150,000 is supposed to represent the service for the year, except that the $20,000
The MINISTER OF TRADE AND COMMERCE-is available in case of need. As a matter of fact it was not paid last vear at all.
Steam service between Halifax, St. John's, Newfoundland, and Liverpool from July 1, 1901, to June 30, 1902, $20,000.
This contract is with Furness, Withy & Company. They threw up the service for a while, but they renewed it. It starts at Halifax, touches at ]St. John's Nfld., and then proceeds to Liverpool and back again.
Mr. WALLACE.
Is tlie subsidy given because it does the trade from Halifax to Newfoundland ?
It is largely for ,the interprovincial trade, but I think some merchandise goes to Liverpool.
Mr. WALLACE.
Do they carry mails ?
We send mails from Halifax to St. John's, Nfld., but it would be too slow for the English mail service.
Steam service between St. John and Glasgow during winter of 1901-2, $7,500.
This is the usual vote to the Donaldson line, known as the Reford firm. They performed the service very satisfactorily last year.
Steam service between St. John, Dublin and Belfast during the winter of 1901-2, $7,500.
This is for the Ulster Steam Company, known as the Head line.
