The MINISTER OF TRADE AND COMMERCE.
At present we are doing it with the firm who have been performing it for a very long time. Of course, this is a service which is called for under the terms of confederation.
Subtopic: WARREN Y. SOPER.
At present we are doing it with the firm who have been performing it for a very long time. Of course, this is a service which is called for under the terms of confederation.
Hon. Mr. PRIOR.
I understand that. Is it the intention of the minister to continue the contract with the same firm ?
As at present advised, I have had no complaints. I understand that the service is giving satisfaction to British Columbia.
Hon. Mr. PRIOR.
So it is. It is first-rate.
Hon. Mr. PRIOR.
Does not the hon. minister think that a service such as that is worth more money ?
That is quite another thing. If I can get it for $5,000, I am bound to get it.
Steam communication between a port or ports in Prince Edward Island and a port or ports in Great Britain, $5,000.
Mr. BORDEN (Halifax).
Is this a regular service ?
No. We have had a great deal of trouble with this service, and I think I shall be compelled to ask the House in the supplementary estimates for an increased vote, in order to enable that service to be performed. We have been unsuccessful in obtaining proper vessels to do this service. I hope that with a small addition to this vote we will be able to obtain an efficient service, but so far it has not been satisfactory. We did not use the whole of the vote last year because we could not get the vessels to supply the service. But, I anticipate that with a small increase we shall be able to secure a regular and permanent service from the Island to Great Britain.
Mr. BORDEN (Halifax).
With respect to the service which was performed last Sir RICHARD CARTWRIGHT.
year, was the amount of freight considered adequate ? Did it come up to the expectations of the department ?
I am told that the cargoes were reasonably full ; but there were too few trips to test the service properly. A more regular and frequent service is necessary for a fair test.
To promote direct communication and trade between Canada and South Africa, $5,000.
The vote of last year was not spent, but I thought it well to repeat it, because I am in hopes that when the war terminates we may be able to do a considerable amount of business in South Africa. I have retained the services of a gentleman of some considerable commercial experience, who is travelling over Cape Colony, Natal, Rhodesia and the Transvaal, with the view of ascertaining and reporting to us in what way our trade can be best facilitated there.
Hon. Mr. IIAGGART.
Who is the gentleman ?
Mr. Cummings, of Lyn or Brock-ville.
Mr. WILSON.
What are his salary and expenses ?
I think he gets his travelling expenses and some three or four hundred dollars a month.
Mr. TAYLOR.
Was Mr. Cummings a defeated candidate for the riding of Brock-ville a few years ago ?
Yes, I think so. My hon. friend is a near neighbour, and would know exactly.
Steam communication during the season of 1901, i.e., from the opening to the closing of navigation, between Baddeck, Grand Narrows and Iona, and one trip each fortnight to Big Pond and East Bay, $4,000.
Mr. BELL (Pictou).
I have had some communication with reference to this service. Some parties seem to think it is very highly paid in proportion to the service rendered. I suppose it is the same as last year ?
The same vote as last year.
