Mr. MONK.
Does the wharf at Murray Bay belong to the government ?
Subtopic: C. FITZPATRICK.
Mr. MONK.
Does the wharf at Murray Bay belong to the government ?
Yes, it was built by us.
Mr. BENNETT.
Is any use made of that dock by a line of steamboats ?
Yes, Murray Bay has become quite a town, it is a summer resort.
Mr. BENNETT.
What were the receipts last year from that government dock ?
My hon. friend, the Minister of Marine and Fisheries, collects dues at these wharfs.
Mr. BENNETT.
I desire to call attention to a formidable list that appears on P-183 of the Auditor General's Report. There is a list of government docks from which not a cent of revenue is derived, and I find among them Murray Bay. No revenue came to the Crown during the fiscal year 18991900 from Murray Bay, among a long list of others. It may be all very well for hon. gentlemen to go through the province and other parts of the Dominion, and from time to time announce that these millions are voted away without discussion. From this side of the House there can only come what has come to-night, an inquiry for explanation from the minister as to the expenditure, and a chorus of the hon. gentleman's friends ' Carried.' But, that will' not go with the public, and hon. gentlemen will find that throughout the province of Ontario, as they found in the riding of North Bruce a little while ago, when expenditures of millions are going on in this way, the public will ask for a little more than the shout 1 Carried.' The minister stated that there was a revenue from that dock, whereas the returns show that there is no revenue.
That is not under my department.
Mr. BENNETT.
It may be a little consolation to the hon. gentlemen who are shouting ' Carried ' to an expenditure of hundreds of thousands of dollars, to know that the government is spending all this vast sum of money on docks that do not return a cent of revenue.
On nearly all these wharfs dues are collected by the Department of Marine and Fisheries ; I know that as a fact.
Mr. HUGHES (Victoria).
I would ask the minister if there is anything in the estimates for any public work on the Island of Anticosti ?
No. We have no public works there except the telegraph system for the use of the trade.
Mr. FOWLER.
Do I understand the minister to say that the Island of Anticosti does not belong to us?
It belongs to us as part of our national domain.
Mr. FOWLER.
As much as New Brunswick belongs to us ?
If my hon. friend buys a house, does the house belong to him or does it belong to this
country ? What I meant to say was that we had no possible interest to build wharfs there.
