The MINISTER OF TRADE AND COMMERCE (Hon. Sir Richard Cartwright) :

,1. The steamer 'Amelia' made thirty-five trips to Magdalen islands and return during the season of 1901.

2. The tonnage is 356 gross and 103 net; cargo capacity, 15,000 cubic feet or equal to about 2,000 barrels ; holds certificate for 250 passengers ; sleeping berth for 20 passengers in saloon and same number in forecabin.

3. and 4. The further additions made to the steamer last year for passenger accommodation were three private cabins in the saloon amidship, fitted with two berths each, also there was rearranged a large cabin aft which was used for officers' quarters with sleeping berths for 10-both saloons steam heated, electric lighted and connected with electric bells. It is claimed that the accommodations have been more than adequate for the number of passengers carried. The berths were not all occupied on any trip last season.

5. It is not at present in contemplation to do so.

The POSTMASTER GENERAL (Hon. Wm. Mulock).

Tenders for this service were invited. Two were received, one tender being for $24.96 and another, that of Mr. James McLaughlin at $29. The inspector reported the tenderer at $24.96 to be incompetent to perform the service, and accordingly the contract has been awarded to Mr. James McLaughlin, who is also postmaster at Anten Mills, at $29. The inspector has been instructed to complete the contract with Mr. McLaughlin, and the necessary contract for this purpose has been sent for execution, but the department has not been advised whether it has been executed. .

S. Fielding) :

1. No claim has been filed by the Dominion made up to the date named in the honourable gentleman's question. The approximate amount of the claim of the Dominion against the province is $322,000, which, with interest up to the time of the filing of the claim by the Dominion, made then an approximate claim of $475,000.

2. Claim of the Dominion filed 18th October, 1893 ; answer of the province of Ontario filed 6th November, 1895.

3. The claim was brought before the arbitrators by the Dominion and postponed at the request of the Ontario government. Subsequently a date for hearing was fixed, but owing to the illness of one of the arbitrators the case was not proceeded with. An application will shortly be made for a further hearing.

Yes, copy of the petition for disallowance has, following the usual practice, been transferred to the government of Manitoba for their observations. The statute itself has not yet been transmitted to this government. When it is received, and the reply of the Manitoba government, the matter will be considered in the usual way.
