Mr. PUGSLEY.
$10,000 of this is a revote. I could give the particulars if desired.
Mr. BERGERON.
I see that the same firms who were engaged in furnishing the government in the other buildings in Halifax are still employed here. There is not Mr. PUGSLEY.
much use asking for tenders. The same contractors usually do the work. We have the firms of Rhodes, Curry & Co., Longard Bros., Frank Reardon all through the Auditor General's Report.
Mr. PUGSLEY.
Four tenders were received in reply to publie advertisements. I do not wonder at Rhodes, Curry & Co. getting many contracts, because they are the largest building contractors we have in the lower provinces. I am not quite sure that they are not the largest in Canada. They have large works at Amherst where they employ over 1,500 men, and I can well understand that they can do work cheaply. They are very large builders of cars as well. Not long ago they erected a great many buildings at Sydney. Longard Bros, are a very reputable firm also. At all events the lowest tenders were a'ccepted.
Inverness public building, $10 WO.
Mr. PUGSLEY'. This is only a revote of $10,000 to complete this building. (It was placed under contract July 26, 1906. It is a building of 2i storeys high with an annex. It is built of brick on stone foundation with stone trimmings. It is required for post office and customs purposes.
Mr. BENNETT.
What is the contract price ?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
Mr. BENNETT.
Does that include heating?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
No, the total probable cost, including heating, boilers, electric wiring, fittings, furniture, &c., exclusive of the site, is $22,950.
Mr. CROCKET.
Who is the clerk of works?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
Mr. Mclsaac. He gets $3 per day.
Mr. BERGERON.
How much does he get altogether?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
The date of the contract was 20th July, 1906, and the date of completion was 1st November last year.
Mr. BERGERON.
Is the building ocm-pleted now ?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
Pretty nearly.
Mr. BERGERON.
What is the meaning of the drawback of $S96.27 ?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
That is the percentage retained until the work is completed. Suppose that under the estimate there will be $20,000 to the contractor, 10 per cent is kept back as a further guarantee for the completion of the work.
Mr. CROCKET.
Is Mr. Mclsaac, the clerk of the works, a mason or a carpenter?
Mr. PUGSLEY.
I am not sure which, but I understand he is a practical man.
Mr. MCLENNAN.
He is a carpenter.
Shelburne public building, $10,000.
