George Eulas Foster
Conservative (1867-1942)
Mr. FOSTER.
Is it on account of the necessary absence of the Minister of Agriculture ?
Subtopic: JOHN GRANT.
Mr. FOSTER.
Is it on account of the necessary absence of the Minister of Agriculture ?
Mr. FIELDING.
The absence of the Minister of Agriculture is as necessary as that of many other hon. gentlemen on both sides of the House.
Mr. FOSTER.
But he is a minister ?
Mr. FIELDING.
We are all members here, and we speak as members more than as ministers, and the absence of one member is not to be censured more than the absence of another.
Motion agreed to, and House adjourned at 12.05 a.m., Wednesday. cancellation of the resolution adopted the 20th of May last, by which the House adopted the fourth report of the committee appointed to supervise the official debates of the House. I beg to move : That the resolution adopted by this House on the 20th of May last adopting the fourth report of the committee appointed to supervise the official debates of the House, be reconsidered and rescinded; that the said fourth report of the said committee be referred back to said committee with instructions to inquire into the necessity of and demand for said additional translator and the qualifications of said E. Charlier to act as such translator and to be appointed to such new position and to inquire also as to such additional measures as may be necessary to ensure the prompt and efficient translation of the official documents of this House. I would have given notice to my hon. friend, the member of St. James division (Mr. Gervais) who is chairman of that committee, but he has not been in the House lately. In fact, I do not think he has been here since the adoption of the fourth report in question. Nevertheless, with the unanimous consent of the House, the motion may be disposed of now. I do not think there is any doubt, from what has transpired since that fourth report was adopted, that the report must be reconsidered. It was adopted under the erroneous impression that it involved no additional expense. 1 shall present the motion, if my right hon. friend consents, or leave it as a notice of motion.
I would prefer that it should stand as a notice. I can talk with my hon. friend during the day and perhaps, fix a day for moving it.
As the matter has been some time in abeyance, it is urgent that the motion should be presented to-morrow.
Sir WILFRID LAURIER.
Perhaps. I shall see my hon. friend during the day.
Hon A. B. AYLESWURTH (Minister of Justice).
At the request of my hon. friend the leader of the opposition, I beg to lay on the table a copy of letter written by me to the city clerk of Sydney, N.S., with reference to the release of Agnes B. Kun.
