That is rather inconsistent with the idea of the minister that only vessels can get near to this wharf.

This wharf is not built yet. No steamers can come to the wharf but they do call at the wharf in the adjoining parish of St. Jean des Ohaillons and these two steamers make two trips a week. So, there is one steamer every day calling at that wharf. When this wharf at Ste. Croix is built there will be one steamer a day. I live in the city of Quebec and we want this accommodation because the market 'of Quebec is supplied by the farmers of Lotbin-iere as well as the farmers of other localities. We will find it impossible to get the products of this county at reasonable rates unless this accommodation is provided. If the products have to be transported ten miles to the railway, transferred from the railway to the boat, taken across to Quebec and then taken from the boat to the mai-ket it will so increase the cost that it will be impossible to bring them to Quebec.

We are then asked to vote $46,000 for a wharf that is to accommodate one steamer a day. Does not the minister think that it would be better to build a $6,000 wharf and put the remaining $40,000 into a steamer?

It has already been 'explained that we cannot get a sufficient depth of water for the steamers without building out a considerable distance and to provide a wharf that will accommodate the steamers will cost this amount.

It is crib work joined by bridges. It extends out about 700 or 800 feet.

I have not the details of the new wharf. * The site will have to be changed as there is no water at the old site of the old wharf.

I can give specifications of the plan it is now proposed to adopt. First, we are to improve the road down to the foot of the hill at the shore line.

It will be a public road. Then we will have a crib roadway of timber and stone to the foot of the hill, 85,000 cubic feet; new intermediate block 100 by 22 by 17 equals 87,400 cubic feet; head block average 2124 by 524 by 19 equals 211,964 cubic feet; new trestle roadway 500 feet which will be capable of being removed in the fall. That gives a very good idea in a general way of the extent of the wharf.
