Air. BALLANTYNE:

I am not accountable for a newspaper article.

Air. AleMASTER: I know that.

Air. A1ACKENZIE KING: This amount

of $20,000,000, that we are being asked to vote is a very large sum; we have been discussing this item a long time, and I think there has been no effort on this side to obstruct, but only to elicit such information as is in the public interest. I should like to ask the minister to let the item stand for discussion at some subsequent sitting of the House. It is a large enough sum to warrant further discussion, and we ought perhaps to have a little more information as to just what the consequence would be of the item not carrying. I should like to hear from the minister just how far the programme he has in view is from completion and in what degree it would be affected if the item should not carry.

Air. BALLANTYNE:

If the item did not carry, of course, that would be the end ol it. While I would like very much to meet the views of the leader of the Opposition, because the Government has been met in a very fair spirit, not only by himself but by all the members opposite,-and I might say that this is not the first occasion on which they have treated this question as a national one, but they have done so at previous sessions-I gave to the best of my ability very detailed information this afternoon; we have been on this item now since half past three o'clock. Much as I should like to meet the views of the Opposition, I think we ought really to pass the item now. If there is any further information that- the leader of the Opposition or any other hon. member desires, I should be glad to give it, but we are all anxious to get through with the business of the session.

Mr. BELAND:

This is a very important item amounting to $20,000,000, one of the largest items that is submitted for our consideration. Undoubtedly, a number of hon. members who have not been present in the House this afternoon and evening may require some further information. I am sure that on this side of the House we do not want to obstruct this item in any way, but merely wish to elicit the information we require in order to justify this expenditure. The Government, therefore, should not refuse postponing until a further date the consideration of the item.

Air. BALLANTYNE:

In view of the request of the leader of the Opposition and also of the genial hon. member for Beauce (Mr. Beland), the Government will agree to postponing the discussion of this item.

Item stands.

Mr. McMASTER:

I would like to know when the consent was-obtained for the use of the name " T. Eaton." I do not find that name among the promoters of the Bill and it seems to me that the member for Parkdale (Mr. Mowat) should give the Committee some assurance that the use of the name is authorized. On the face of it there is nothing to connect T. Eaton with the 'formation of the company.

Mr. MOWAT:

The incorporators, some of whom are the principal officers of the company, I am assured and am convinced, have been authorized by the T. Eaton Company to make this application. It is not likely that any general life insurance will be done by the company at all; otherwise they would choose some name of a more commercial character. I can assure the hon.

gentleman that the application is perfectly bona fide and that the incorporators have simply adopted the form of the model Bill which is in the Insurance Act. I hope the measure will be allowed to pass.
