Anyone who has been there and remembers the roadway across to the Royal Military College will
understand. It is a causeway across the water; it had to be built and made permanent. It is not a road in the city or anything of that nature; it connects across to the Royal Military College.

The contract was let last year, but no progress was made with the work. The contractor has assembled the materials and is now ready to proceed.

There were five tenders received, the lowest being that of E. Conroy, for $89,768.40. The others ran up to as high as $143,000.

Has anything been paid out on the contract yet?
Mr. McCURDY:
No.
Mr. COPP:
The contract is for $89,000 and you are asking for a vote of only $70,000.
Mr. McCURDY:
The vote we are asking will pretty well cover the work that will be done this year. The contract will hardly be finished by this time next year.

North Grey.
Item agreed to. Port Colborne - repairs to breakwaters. $55,000.
Mr. CAHILL:
What is the explanation of this?
Mr. McCURDY:
This is for repairs to the west breakwaters, covering three lengths of 496, 134 and 31 feet, respectively, which were severely damaged by storms. This is a very important port, and the works cannot be allowed to go into disrepair.
Mr. ARCHAMBAULT:
I understand
that there is a vote in the Supplementary Estimates also for repairs to Port Col-borne.
Mr. McCURDY:
My hon. friend no
doubt refers to the vote that is being asked for by the Railway Department for repairs to the elevator at Port Colborne.
