Herbert Meredith Marler
Liberal
Mr. MARLER:
Will my hon. friend from
Springfield guarantee that?
Subtopic: CONTINUATION OF DEBATE ON THE ANNUAL
Sub-subtopic: MINISTER OF FINANCE
Mr. MARLER:
Will my hon. friend from
Springfield guarantee that?
Mr. HOEY:
Yes, I will stake my reputation on that for ten years.
Mr. MARLER:
I suppose in that case I
am justified in stating that my hon. friend will vote against any further reduction of duties?
Mr. HOEY:
He will vote for further reductions, believing it will help the industry still further rather than hinder it.
Mr. MARLER:
My hon. friend believes
in a lingering, rather than a sudden death then?
Mr. HOEY:
No, not death at all; it is
inspiration.
Mr. MARLER:
My hon. friend believes in inspiration?
Mr. HOEY:
Inspiration and animation.
Mr. MARLER:
Well, those are two theoretical words which I have heard little boys using when chasing shadows and rainbows.
Oh, oh.
Mr. MARLER:
Some hon. gentlemen seem to treat this as a joke. We are playing with human lives in this matter. We have got over the day of chasing rainbows; we are down to facts.
Mr. GARLAND (Bow River):
It is about time.
Mr. MARLER:
Oh, my hon. friend from
Bow River-the place where all the slaves come from.
Mr. GARLAND (Bow River):
Yes, slaves of the implement manufacturers and the protective tariff.
Mr. MARLER:
The same way with the
people in Montreal-they are all slaves too.
Mr. GARLAND (Bow River):
Not all of
them; I know one hon. gentleman who is not.
Mr. CRERAR:
I dislike interrupting an
hon. member when he is speaking, but my hon. friend is very apprehensive as to the future of the agricultural implement industry in Canada as a result of the reduction in duties brought about by the budget. The cream separator industry in this country has been free for many, many years. Will my hon. friend tell me why, if this industry can be built up without any protection whatever, the plow industry cannot also be built up in the same way where the elements are precisely the same?
Mr. MARLER:
I am really very much
obliged to my distinguished friend for asking me the question. The agricultural implement industry is, I think, subject to a great deal more competition than the other industry which he speaks about.
No.
Mr. MARLER:
But in any event let me
say this to the hon. member for Marquette (Mr. Crerar): I am not particularly picking
out the agricultural implement industry.
