BILLS PROPOSED TO AUTHORIZE THE CONSTRUCTION OF BRANCH LINES


Mr. F. S. CAHILL (Pontiac) presented the fourth report of the select standing committee on Railways, Canals and Telegraph Lines as follows: Your committee have considered the following bills and have agreed to report the same without amendment: Bill No. 32, an Act respecting the construction of a Canadian National Railway line between Sunnybrae and Guysborough in the province of Nova Scotia. Bill No. 63. an Act respecting the construction of a Canadian National Railway line between Lockeport station and the town of Lockeport in the province of Nova Scotia. Bill No. 64. an Act respecting the construction of a Canadian National Railway line from the end of the China Clay branch to St. Remi d'Amherst, in the province of Quebec.


OLD AGE PENSIONS


Mr. W. G. RAYMOND (Brantford) presented the first report of the special committee appointed to make inquiry into an old age pension system for Canada, recommending that they be given leave to have the proceedings of the committee printed from time to time when deemed advisable, and that rule 74 be suspended in relation thereto. On motion of Mr. Raymond the report was concurred in.

Of the 2,466 firms and individuals in arrears of sales tax for a period of over three months, 431 are retail bakers and confectioners who have refused to pay sales tax pending the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of Rex vs. Versailles Sweets; 442 are cases of firms and individuals in liquidation; 363 firms and individuals are paying arrears by instal-. ments and prosecutions have been entered in 463 cases.

In the balance of the cases the department is corresponding with the firms and individuals concerned with a view to making satisfactory Hon. Mr. GRAHAM:

arrangements for payment of arrears before legal action is taken.

These latter cases require nursing as drastic action would probably result in financial failures.
