Thomas Cantley
Conservative (1867-1942)
Mr. CANTLEY:
How many navigation
schools are maintained in the maritime provinces?
Subtopic: DEPARTMENT OF MARINE AND FISHERIES .
Item agreed to. Examination of masters and mates, $20,000.
Mr. CANTLEY:
How many navigation
schools are maintained in the maritime provinces?
Mr. CARDIN:
There is one in each of the following places: Halifax, Yarmouth,
North Sydney, St. John and Charlottetown.
Item agreed to. Inspection of live stock shipping, $4,500.
Mr. CANTLEY:
Will the minister tell us how much was spent under this vote last year?
Mr. CARDIN:
We spent $3,709.
Mr. CANTLEY:
I thought the shipment of cattle was almost a thing of the past.
Mr. CARDIN:
There are no shipments of cattle at present, but we are maintaining two inspectors in Montreal because we do not know whether or not there will be any shipments in future, we have to keep the officers there in case of need. I am also informed that we are using them as night men in the pilot office at Montreal; we are keeping them busy although there are no inspections made.
Mr. CANTLEY:
That is a very comfortable position for them; I hope they will be able to keep it, but only about three-fifths of the vote was spent last year while the same amount is being asked this year. I do not think there is very much likelihood of that trade being resumed in the near future.
Item agreed to. Miscellaneous and unforeseen expenses, $5,000.
Mr. SIMPSON:
I suppose I should have asked this question under item 201, but 1 would like to inquire of the minister if the Dominion steamers, the light tenders and so on, are now equipped with wireless?
Mr. CARDIN:
They are not all equipped wiith wireless but twelve are so equipped. Does my hon. friend desire the names of those vessels?
Mr. SIMPSON:
I think not. Are the steamers operating on the great lakes equipped with wireless?
Mr. CARDIN:
No, they are not.
Mr. SIMPSON:
I think they should foe.
Mr. CARDIN:
I am inclined to agree.
Item agreed to. Life saving service, including rewards for saving life, $80,000.
Mr. ROSS (Kingston):
Will the minister give us the details of this item?
Mr. CARDIN:
This proposed appropriation is for the maintenance of stations on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and on the great lakes for rendering aid to vessels in distress, for saving lives endangered by marine casualties and for rewards for saving lives on the

high seas under conditions of difficulty and great danger, requiring a display of exceptional bravery. No change is made this year. For example, in the province of Ontario there are stations at Cobourg, Goderich, Long Point, Point Pelee, Port Stanley and Southampton.
Mr. ROSS (Kingston):
What stations are located on lake Ontario?
