John Anderson Fraser
Conservative (1867-1942)
Mr. FRASER:
What are these improvements?
Item agreed to. Deserters Canyon-improvements, $2,000.
Mr. FRASER:
What are these improvements?
Mr. ELLIOTT:
This amount is required to provide for the construction of a tow path
Supply-Harbours and Rivers-B.C.
along the bank of Finlay river through Deserters Canyon. The proposed work is requested by the district engineer. The construction of this tow path will allow the freighters to line their boats up and down stream instead of unloading and packing over a long and difficult trail over the walls of the canyon.
Mr. FRASER:
That is on the upper Peace river. Might I ask what work has been proceeded with during the current year at the Peace river rapids, just below the junction of the Finlay and Peace rivers?
Mr. ELLIOTT:
We have the details here only of the works that have been going on in the places for which votes are being asked, and my hon. friend will readily understand that we have not the details with respect to places for which votes are not included in the estimates.
Sir GEORGE PERLEY:
But the minister could make a note of the question, and send a memorandum to the hon. member on Monday.
Mr. ELLIOTT:
I shall be very glad to do so.
Mr. FRASER:
Was an amount provided in last year's estimates for the improvement of the Peace river at the Peace river rapids?
Mr. BLATCHFORD:
My hon. friend, I believe, is speaking of that part of the river just below the Finlay forks. I would advise the Minister of Public Works to take into consideration the necessity of improvements at that point, for it is a very hazardous place, passing up or down. Some improvements should be made there.
Mr. ELLIOTT:
What is the name of the place? Is it the Finlay forks?
Mr. FRASER:
Just below the forks.
Mr. ELLIOTT:
There was nothing last year.
Mr. FRASER:
Has there been any work going on there?
Mr. ELLIOTT:
I think probably out of the general vote there was some work done at that point.
Mr. FRASER:
Out of last year's general vote for harbours and rivers?
Mr. ELLIOTT:
That would be the vote if there was any work done. There was no special estimate. If any work were done there, it would be done out of the general dredging vote.
Item agreed to. Fraser Lake-wharf repairs, $1,200.
Mr. BARBER:
What is this for?
Mr. ELLIOTT:
This amount is requested by the district engineer to provide for general repairs required to the wharf, which was damaged by the action of the frost and ice. There is a small settlement at this site, but it is a railhead for a considerable area in which logging and farming is carried on extensively.
Mr. FRASER:
When was that wharf
built?
