Mr. DURANLEAU:

Unless we discover

that the salaries paid to employees of these boards are exorbitant, the Minister of Marine has no intention to intervene. However, we are of the opinion that the employees of the harbour boards should receive about the same salaries as are paid to civil servants.

Would the minister interevene if the salaries were too low? I remarked that he stated he would interfere only if the salaries were exorbitant.

I think that in such a case the Minister of Labour (Senator Robertson) would step in.

CANADIAN FARM LOAN BOARD

UFA

William Thomas Lucas

United Farmers of Alberta

Mr. W. T. LUCAS (Camrose):

Mr. Speaker, I would like to ask a question of the right hon. Prime Minister (Mr. Bennett) in his capacity as Minister of Finance, based on a number of protests I have received from borrowers under the Farm Loan Act, that undue pressure is being used at this time in making collections. We realize that the matter of repayment must be keipt before, the attention of borrowers at all times but these letters would indicate that the notices sent out are of a very peremptory and harassing nature and it would not seem that any consideration is being given to the unusual financial conditions which prevail at the present time. Is it the wish of the right hon. the Prime Minister that such a course should be pursued at this particular time?

Right Hon. R. B. BENNETT (Prime Minister) :

Mr. Speaker, there seems to be a misapprehension as to the relation of the farm loan board to the government. In view of that misapprehension I shall make a statement to-morrow bearing on the question asked by the hon. member for Camrose (Mr. Lucas).
