Thomas Gerow Murphy (Minister of the Interior; Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs)
Conservative (1867-1942)
Mr. MURPHY:
The hon. member does not agree with the hon. member for Ottawa (Mr. Chevrier).
Subtopic: DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
Mr. MURPHY:
The hon. member does not agree with the hon. member for Ottawa (Mr. Chevrier).
Mr. VENIOT:
I did not say that. I was not referring to the hon. member for Ottawa; I was referring to the statement made by the Minister of the Interior. I have knowledge of two cases, one in the Department of Public Works and one in the Post Office department, where returned soldiers, fathers of families- 22110-1851
one of six children and the other of seven- were retired in order to make room for civilians. The principle adopted by the Minister of the Interior is certainly not followed by the other ministers.
Mr. MURPHY:
I cannot answer as to that.
Mr. CASGRAIN:
When did this change
take place?
Mr. MURPHY:
To which change does the hon. member refer?
Mr. CASGRAIN:
When were these men retired?
Mr. MURPHY:
In the observatory?
Mr. CASGRAIN:
Yes, on what date?
Mr. MURPHY:
They were notified of their
retirement some time during the latter part of April.
Mr. VALLANCE:
How long had these five individuals been in the service, and how long had the returned men who took over the positions been in the service?
Mr. MURPHY:
The terms of service varied from five to fifteen years.
Mr. VALLANCE:
Does that refer to the returned men as well?
Mr. MURPHY:
I am speaking of those who were retired. I have not the information before me in connection with those who took their places, but if the hon. member desires it I shall endeavour to secure it.
Mr. VALLANCE:
I wish the hon. minister would secure also the ages of the individuals.
Mr. MURPHY:
In both cases?
Mr. VALLANCE:
In all cases of those who are appointed and of those who were retired.
Mr. CHEVRIER:
Why were those five
men retired?
Mr. MURPHY:
I have answered the question, but the hon. member does not like my answer. Mr. Chairman, I move that the committee rise, report progress and ask leave to sit again.
Progress reported.
Mr. MACKENZIE KING:
What business is proposed for to-morrow?
