Mr. NEILL:

He arrived at his figure by figuring on the total output. He is not deliberately deceiving the house, but all the same his figures are incorrect. I was dealing with the coal on which we could and would get 25 cents a ton.

Mr. GORDON:

I have to take the Dominion fuel board's figures from time to time and have always found them accurate. They are relied upon by the coal operators all over Canada.

Mr. NEILL:

Then in this particular instance I am unfortunate, for the fuel board told me the figures were mainly estimates.

Mr. NEILL:

These figures came from the Department of National Revenue, and as they collect the revenue surely their statistics must be accurate. Here they are for all British Columbia. They discriminate between shipments to the United States and to other countries. Shipments out of Nanaimo to the United States, 48,847 tons; shipments out of Nanaimo to other countries, 62,621 tons. If you add the two sets of figures together they give a total of 110,000 tons. Then: shipped from Cranbrook, 49,902 tons; from Femie, 60,732 tons; then there are small shipments through New Westminster and Prince Rupert, which make u.p a bigger sum than he gave.

Yes; he said only 186,000. But both figures are for all British Columbia.

Pardon me. I was dealing with the bunker output of Vancouver island; he was taking in the whole product of British Columbia.

Mr. NEILL:

Just a minute. He was taking in practically the whole product of British Columbia. Here are the figures, and they check up within 9,000 tons, a discrepancy that will often arise because of one place quoting the long ton and the other the short ton. Here are the department's figures.

Mr. NEILL:

Then it will be paid illegally because the bounty is only going to be paid on bunker coal mined on Vancouver island. Is he going to treat the shipments from Fernie as bunker trade? You cannot send ships from Fernie.
