Motion agreed to.

TRADE RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA

On the orders of the day:

UFA

Michael Luchkovich

United Farmers of Alberta

Mr. MICHAEL LUCHKOVICH (Vegre-ville):

Mr. Speaker, the Toronto Star of February 6 contained an article to the effect that G. G. Serkau had said that his syndicate, strengthened by the addition of much capital, was now prepared to go ahead on its own, financing the Russian barter by itself and asking nothing of the government except a guarantee that once the barter was arranged the duties and regulations would be kept stable. I should like to inquire of the government whether or not such an offer has been received from the syndicate, and, if so, what they propose to do about it.

I think I can state definitely that no such offer has been received.

Mr. GEORGE W. McPHEE (Yorkton): In connection with the Russian deal, did the government or any member thereof have knowledge last October of the proposed deal

TARIFF BOARD-APPOINTMENTS MR. JUSTICE SEDGEWICK

On the orders of the day: Mr. MITCHELL F. HEPBURN (West Elgin): Mr. Speaker, the morning papers contain the personnel of the newly appointed tariff board, naming Mr. Justice Sedgewick as chairman at a salary of $12,000. I should like to know if this is the same Mr. Justice Sedgewick who as an appointee of the Ontario government was the chairman of a commission which investigated the Ontario Hydro Commission and gave that body a complete whitewash.

I do not think it was the hon. member's intention to ask a question but rather to make a smart remark. I do not think the government is called upon to answer frivolous questions.
