Conservative (1867-1942)

Mr. RHODES:

I am not in a position to give my hon. friend amounts, but I may say that I expect to gain by this because the tax of SI .50 as it stood before was too high and the sales were negligible. It is felt now by this reduced impost we shall collect more money than we did when the rate was double the amount.

Mr. RHODES:

The total amount collected last year on all goods was, in round figures* $14,000,000. I am speaking from memory but, I think, accurately. The amount collected on British preference goods was $3,000,000. Therefore on the basis of this computation we shall reduce the revenue by $1,500,000.

Mr. RHODES:

In conformity with the

announcement made by the Prime Minister as to amendments to be made to this tax I propose to move an amendment to resolution No. 9. Inasmuch as it is now five minutes to eleven o'clock and I should like to table the findings of the tariff board before the house adjourns, I might just give notice of this so that it will appear in the votes and proceedings together with the other amendments in order that hon. members may before the next sitting have cognizance of all the amendments. I will hand to the chairman so that they will appear in the votes and proceedings, amendments to resolutions Nos. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
