Mr. CRUICKSHANK:

I know, it is the British government. But am I to be told here that we are a part of the British empire, and yet we cannot find some way to avoid this lady being compelled to subsist on charity? What are we here for if we are not part of the British empire? It is to face such questions that we as members are assembled here, and as long as I am a member of this house I shall never be satisfied to offer any alibi or any excuse when the wife of a man who is flying a bomber to-night in defence of London and of ourselves has to depend on charity.

On motion of Mr. Hanson (Skeena) the debate was adjourned.

On motion of Mr. Ilsley the house adjourned at 10.53 p.m.

Wednesday, November 27, 1940.
