Mr. MacKINNON (Edmonton West):

The United Kingdom ministry of food informed us that they would require the same assurances as those they had last year; that is, that the prices to be paid will not be disclosed, and that the market will remain open during the period of the transaction.

CONCESSIONS ON UNITED KINGDOM GOODS PROVIDED FOR IN BUDGET

On the orders of the day:

LIB

James Lorimer Ilsley (Minister of Finance and Receiver General)

Liberal

Hon. J. L. ILSLEY (Minister of Finance):

I thought the house might be interested in a telegram which has been received on behalf of the British government from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs:

London, May 2, 1941.

High Commissioner for Canada has informed us of further wide and substantial tariff concessions on United Kingdom goods for which the Canadian budget provides. We appreciate to the full the magnitude and generosity of these measures which are yet another example of Canada's wholehearted cooperation. We attach the greatest value to our export trade with Canada, and, within the limits of our resources, no effort will be spared to take every advantage 0f these concessions for which we wish to express our most grateful thanks.

REPRESENTATIONS OF TWENTY-NINE MEN WHO SERVED IN 1914-18 AS TO REFUSAL OF EMPLOYMENT

On the orders of the day:

Joseph Sasseville Roy

Independent Conservative

Mr. J. S. ROY (Gaspe):

Mr. Speaker, I should like to direct a question to the Minister of National Defence. My question is based upon a communication which I have just received from Quebec city and which is signed by twenty-nine war veterans who give their serial numbers and their years of service in the great war of 1914-18. These veterans claim that they have made numerous attempts in the last few months to obtain employment in the various war sendees, which requests have been turned down because they were not known as partisans of the Liberal party. I table this communication for the minister's information. My question is: Is the government aware of this state of things, and will it tolerate it any longer?

My answer to my hon. friend is that the government is not aware of that state of affairs, and in my opinion it is absolutely incorrect.

Mr. ROY:

How can the Minister of National Defence say that the statement of these war veterans in Quebec is incorrect?

Mr. RALSTON:

I do not think my hon. friend is entitled to ask another question on the same point. What I say to him is this: When it is stated that veterans are refused employment, if it is in government services, because of the political views they hold, in my opinion that statement is absolutely incorrect.
