Mr. GILLIS:

The same thing, new business under new management, the same old business operating for forty years though. I am a little sceptical on that point. With regard' to throwing the responsibility back into the-hands of lawyers again, who interpret the lawr that is their job, and it is fine, but I should like to ask anyone in this committee this; question: Who is better qualified to interpret what the income tax laws or the excess profits tax laws mean than the people who write them?

Mr. GILLIS:

Absolutely: On the other

hand, if I am living in Vancouver or in Nova Scotia and I have a dispute with the income-tax department I can wend my way over to-a lawyer's office, pay him $100 and get some advice, and six months later I will get ai decision which he gets from the income tax department. That is where he gets it.' On the other hand, if I want to sit down and write the deputy minister of taxation, to whom I often write, any time I write to him I get a fair and reasonable explanation of any tax problem that may be bothering anyone and it costs me nothing but a four-cent stamp.

Mr. GILLIS:

That is the decision the

lawyer would get. And, mind you, a great many of them write asking me to get in touch with the finance department to obtain decisions in certain matters, and I do so. You know .lawyers are smart, for themselves. I should like to ask the hon. member for Rosedale, is he prepared to recommend to

Excess Profits Tax

the Minister of Labour when he comes back to the house that we immediately remove the wage controls?

On a point of order, Mr. Chairman, is this relevant to this discussion? I will give the hon. gentleman my answers to those questions, if he wants them.
