PRIVILEGE

MR. ZAPLITNY-REFERENCE TO NEWS ITEM IN WINNIPEG "CITIZEN" OF MARCH 17

CCF

Frederick Samuel Zaplitny

Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.)

Mr. F. S. ZAPLITNY (Dauphin):

Mr. Speaker, I rise to a question of privilege. My question arises out of a news item appearing in the Winnipeg Citizen of March 17, reporting on the debate which took place in this house on the wheat bill. In the item the hon. member for Springfield (Mr. Sinnott) is quoted as saying:

If the hon. member for Portage la Prairie (C.C.F., Miller) had stopped speaking on Friday last, we would have had this bill through the house now, he commented.

The hon. member for Portage la Prairie, to my best knowledge and belief-and I should know, being chairman of the Manitoba C.C.F.-is not a member of the C.C.F.

MR. SMITH-SALE OF INTEREST OF IMPERIAL OIL IN INTERNATIONAL PETROLEUM

PC

Arthur Leroy Smith

Progressive Conservative

Mr. A. L. SMITH (Calgary West):

On a question of privilege, I wish to call the attention of the house to an announcement in today's papers; I am sure it will please every hon. member. Imperial Oil have sold their interest in International Petroleum which operates in South America for $80,000,000. The money is to be spent in Alberta for oil development. We can now look forward to the day when Canada will be independent of all foreign sources for its oil supplies. I think the Minister of Finance will also be pleased about these United States dollars.

Mr. G. K. FRASER (Peterborough West):

Earlier this afternoon the Minister of Trade and Commerce tabled a letter that he said he had written to the Minister of Finance in respect to extra import bans which he thought should be put on. Will that letter be published in Hansard, or can the minister give a list of the goods now?

It will be published in the newspapers. It has not been customary to put communications of that kind on Hansard. I suppose it could be done if the house wishes it.

I think members of the house should have it instead of having to go to the newspapers for it.

Mr. MacINNIS:

Referring to the question raised by the hon. member for Peterborough West, may I suggest to the Minister of Trade and Commerce that he ask the consent of the house to have the paper which he tabled appear on Hansard? It is an important paper. Such documents are usually read in the house before being tabled. I think the house would be glad to give consent.

Mr. HOWE:

As my hon. friend knows, the Minister of Trade and Commerce is in an extraordinary position in trying to carry out the dollar saving policy with no legislation. He has been in that position for several months. This letter is simply one to the Minister of Finance recommending a certain course of action. All I can say is that a press release will issue this afternoon giving the full

Income Tax

particulars. I see no purpose in burdening Hansard with a letter of that kind.
