Subtopic: PROCEDURE IN RECOMMENDING APPOINTMENTS OF POSTMASTERS
Hon. Ernest Bertrand (Postmaster General):
The answer is in the negative.
On the orders of the day:
Mr. Stanley Knowles (Winnipeg North Centre):
Mr. Speaker, I should like to ask a question of the Minister of National Revenue. Has his attention been called to a news item given out over the radio recently at Lethbridge, Alberta, to the effect that the chamber of commerce of Lethbridge had been informed by the minister or his department that membership dues to the chamber of commerce would now be allowed as income tax deductions?
Inquiries of the Ministry
Hon. J. J. McCann (Minister of National Revenue):
Mr. Speaker, I am not familiar with the broadcast or the news item.
Mr. Knowles:
Will the minister look into it and make a report tomorrow?
Mr. McCann:
I shall look into it.
On the orders of the day:
Mr. A. L. Smith (Calgary West):
Mr. Speaker, I should like to ask a further question of the Minister of National Revenue. The other day someone sent me a form which had been sent out by the minister's department. This form was to be filled in by taxpayers, and contained a number of peculiar items. For instance, it asked how much it cost to have your wife's hair dressed; they wanted to know how much your children spent in buying moving picture tickets, how much you yourself, spent in barber shops, and so on. I was wondering what the object of that information could be, and whether the minister is familiar with the form?
Hon. J. J. McCann (Minister of National Revenue):
I have never received any form of that kind, but I should be pleased to look at it if the hon. member would send it to me. I presume however that it is sent out for purposes of obtaining statistics, and that it would be issued by the bureau of statistics.
On the orders of the day:
Mr. H. R. Argue (Wood Mountain):
Mr. Speaker, I asked a question yesterday of the Prime Minister, at which time he replied that he would look into the matter and give an answer later. My question was whether or not the government contemplates bringing in an amendment to the Prairie Farm Assistance Act.
Right Hon. L. S. St. Laurent (Prime Minister):
No, I am not in a position to answer that question at this time.
