Mr. Hellyer:

Before I take my seat, I think I will just close by saying that I have every confidence in both the administration and the Minister of Finance and his officials, to maintain equilibrium, to maintain our purchasing power and to keep in this country that degree of economic buoyancy which is necessary to provide ample employment, and an increasingly higher standard of living for those apostles who keep interrupting with their gloomy remarks from the opposite side of the house. I have every confidence that there will be no depression in this country. A depression is not necessary.

Mr. Hellyer:

We do not intend to have one. I suggest, Mr. Speaker, that if hon. members opposite would devote their time and talents

The Budget-Mr. Hellyer to an effort to develop new industries so as to provide employment in exploiting the natural resources of the country, we might make appreciable progress toward full nationhood, and in the process enable immigrants in larger numbers to join with us in building Canada into that still greater nation which I am sure we all fervently hope it will one day become. As a closing remark, Mr. Speaker, I should think that this all ties in with something else which is of extreme interest to most people at the present time, and that is that if we can break this one thing, this business cycle, we shall have for all time disproved the Marxist theory and, in the words of Woodrow Wilson, made the world safe for democracy.

On motion of Mr. Fleming the debate was adjourned.
