Milton Fowler Gregg (Minister of Veterans Affairs)

Liberal

Mr. Gregg:

That amount of $20,000 is to provide for the publication of the departmental newspaper Veterans Affairs to be issued bi-monthly, for $4,500; the issue of the French edition of the veterans charter. Those are just being completed or paid for now, and come to $7,500. Then, monthly advertising in newspapers and veterans publications, $8,000. This covers such items as I referred to a little while ago on matters of special interest to veterans. These give a total of $20,000.

Mr. Quelch:

I am somewhat concerned about the discussion which took place regarding hospitalization. Is it still the policy of the department to grant free hospitalization to all veterans of the first war who are

Supply-Veterans Affairs indigent? An indigent veteran has been defined as one with an income of less than $1,000 a year. Is that still the policy?

Mr. Gregg:

The change made and the additional paying class announced a while ago does not in any sense change the situation under class 5A and class 6 patients.

As it is within a minute or so of the time for closing, perhaps the committee might rise. I have a matter which might take some time.

Item stands.

Mr. Fournier (Hull):

Tomorrow we will consider the government notice of motion in the name of the Minister of Transport. Then we will take up Bill No. 135, to amend the Department of Transport Stores Act; Bill No. 263, to amend the Electricity Inspection Act, 1928; Bill No. 264, to amend the Gas Inspection Act; Bill No. 221, to provide for the payment and distribution of prize money. I am not sure as to the order of those bills. I know we will begin with Bill No. 135, but I am not sure as to the order of the others. When those bills have been passed we will go into supply and take up the estimates of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Citizenship and Immigration.
