QUESTION AS TO PRIORITIES FOR FARMERS

On the orders of the day:

PC

Lewis Elston Cardiff

Progressive Conservative

Mr. L. E. Cardiff (Huron North):

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Trade and Commerce. I should like to draw the attention of the house to a group of our population which, if they are not already considered to be one of our most important groups, should be so considered. I refer to the good farmers of Canada. Why are they being discriminated against in the matter of priorities on cement?

Right Hon. C. D. Howe (Minister of Trade and Commerce):

That is hardly a question; it is a statement. I think I can say they are not being discriminated against. There are no priorities on cement. Cement is distributed by the dealers-we hope, fairly to all. I have received no complaints from the distinguished citizens whom my hon. friend claims to represent.

I had a letter this morning from a farmer-

Mi. Speaker: Order. I do not think we should have a discussion at this time on that question.

Mr. Cardiff:

I should like to ask the minister why it is that the only cement the farmers in my part of the country can get is United States cement at 40 cents to 45 cents a bag more than the price paid for our own cement.

Mr. Howe:

I have no idea. I am not responsible for the distribution of cement. I have no authority to distribute cement, and I do not know of any importations of United States cement.

I wish to direct a question to the Minister of Public Works. In view of the great inconvenience to the local people, would it be possible to have extra shifts employed to speed up the repair work being done on the bridge at Lockport?
