Mr. Riley:

I do not question Your Honour's decision or the decision of the self-appointed chairman, but I would like to point out that there is an item now before the committee having to do with the construction or acquisition of buildings, works, land and new equipment for national parks and historic sites services. In Fundy national park the Department of Resources and Development has constructed a number of buildings, including a home for the superintendent, an administration building, a community centre, a number of tourist cabins, a clubhouse, and several other pieces of construction. One of these buildings was rented or loaned to the provincial government for its school of arts and handicrafts.

I simply want to make the recommendation that the Department of Resources and Development make available or lend to the Department of Public Works or the Post Office Department a building which could be used as a post office. May I continue, Your Honour?

Mr. Riley:

I am simply suggesting that there be made available a building that would blend in with the type of building already there so that proper postal facilities may be provided for the tourists who come there to visit Fundy national park each summer. This afternoon the hon. member for Royal said: that I had nothing to do with Fundy national park, but I want to assure you that I am very much interested in it. A number of representations have been made to me urging that proper postal facilities be made available for tourists. As I stated, there is a post office outside the park but it is located in a small building not adapted to use by a large number of people. They tell me

that the roof leaks and'the amount of rental that is paid to the owner is not sufficient to permit him to make capital repairs. Therefore I urge the Minister of Resources and Development to make some type of building available, or to persuaae ms colleagues and good friends, the Minister of Public Works and the Postmaster General, to see that proper facilities are made available for the people of that locality and the many tourists who visit there.

I would like the minister to arrange to have it put on Hansard following my inquiry. I would like to ask the minister what work is to be done under this item covering construction or acquisition of buildings. I notice in the details regarding Cape Breton Highlands park that $240,865 is in the estimates for the current year, which is a considerable reduction from the previous year. What is proposed to be done with this appropriation? In addition to that, there is an item covering maintenance amounting to $140,564.

For the large projects we will call for tenders and issue contracts, while the smaller work will be done by the maintenance staff of the park.

I want to ask one question.

I see an amount for the Prince Edward Island park of $127,600. Is that for new equipment, new buildings or what? What are the details of that?

Of that, $110,000 is for hard surfacing and the remainder is for small maintenance jobs.
