INQUIRY AS TO POSSIBLE CLOSURE OP FRASER RIVER

On the orders of the day:

?

Mr. A. B. Pallerson@Fraser Valley

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Fisheries. Will the minister state whether or not a decision has been reached with respect to the closure of the Fraser river above the New Westminster bridge to commercial fishing?

Hon. James Sinclair (Minister of Fisheries):

I thank the hon. member for having given me notice of his question. The answer to his question is no. I hope to be able to announce a decision before I meet the fishermen's union in convention next week in Vancouver.

Mr. Patterson:

May I ask a supplementary question. Before any such decision is made will the minister consider the possibility of giving the fishermen in that area one year's notice so they will have an opportunity to dispose of their equipment, if they so desire, and secure a livelihood in some other occupation?

Mr. Sinclair:

That question is not quite applicable, because all we are considering is a little earlier closure on two species of salmon in that area.
