George Randolph Pearkes (Minister of National Defence)

Progressive Conservative

Hon. G. R. Pearkes (Minisler of National Defence):

Mr. Speaker, experience has shown that by far the greater majority of the men training in the militia find it impossible to put in 60 days training during the year, so the over-all training period was reduced to 40 days.

REQUEST FOR RECIPROCAL AGREEMENTS WITH UNITED KINGDOM

On the orders of the day:

SC

Ernest George Hansell

Social Credit

Mr. E. G. Hansell (Macleod):

May I direct a question to the Minister of Finance, or perhaps the Minister of National Health and Welfare would care to answer. Since reciprocal agreements were signed yesterday between the United Kingdom and Australia with respect to pensions and other social security benefits paid to their citizens living in the other country, will the government initiate a move to have similar agreements completed between Canada and the United Kingdom? Agreements are in existence between the United Kingdom and Malta, Cyprus and New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION OF MEASURES THIS SESSION TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS

On the orders of the day:

CCF

Alexander Malcolm Nicholson

Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.)

Mr. A. M. Nicholson (Mackenzie):

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Agriculture. If I heard the minister correctly yesterday when he spoke to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture in Montreal, he intimated that during the present year he hoped

to introduce legislation to provide for an improved credit system, crop insurance and a national soil and water conservation program. My question is, does the minister intend to introduce this legislation during the present session of parliament?

REQUEST FOR EXPERIMENTAL

On the orders of the day:

LIB

Charles-Noël Barbès

Liberal

Mr. C. N. Barbes (Chapleau):

May I direct a question to the Minister of Agriculture. Can we expect a favourable decision in the matter of a request made by farmers' organizations in the Abitibi area asking the Department of Agriculture to take over and operate the large St. Marc de Figuery farm, a federal government property, as a district experimental farm which is really needed for the benefit of the northwestern Quebec farming area?

Hon. D. S. Harkness (Minisier of Agriculture):

I have no recollection of any requests along those lines. Possibly they may have come in, but in any event the matter of experimental stations or farms is one which I am always glad to look into and review at any time.

REPORTED STATEMENT BY MINISTER ON PRICE STABILIZATION LEGISLATION

On the orders of the day:

CCF

Edward George McCullough

Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.)

Mr. E. G. McCullough (Moose Mountain):

I should like to direct a question to the Minister of Agriculture arising out of a press report yesterday appearing in the Montreal Gazette, wherein it is stated that the minister, in speaking to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture in Montreal, explained the agricultural stabilization bill in such a manner as to indicate that it was a form of unemployment insurance for farmers. Has the minister's explanation been correctly reported? Does the government consider the agricultural price stabilization bill to be legislation mainly intended to provide a type of unemployment insurance for farmers?
