PC

Donald Methuen Fleming

Progressive Conservative

Mr. Fleming:

The beneficence extended by this government to that worthy supporter was not confined to the year 1948. An earlier return this year will show to any member who cares to look it up that in the years 1947 and 1948 that gentleman received in fees alone, not including disbursements, the sum of $172,000 for services performed-a mere $172,000 for services performed. It was a very generous retainer that he enjoyed from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The labourer is worthy of his hire, and apparently, when he is a Liberal labourer, in the eyes of the government he is particularly worthy of very generous hire. I think the people of Canada, however, who are being called upon to dig down in their pockets to foot these bills on this scale of colossal extravagance, are going to demand a very good reason why this government should requite the services of one eminent Liberal in the sum of $172,000 over a brief span of two years.
