Hon. Lionel Chevrier (Minister of Transport):
Mr. Speaker, on Friday last the hon. member for St. John's West (Mr. Browne) asked whether any consideration had been given to placing the employees of the Newfoundland hotel, St. John's, Newfoundland, on the same rates of wages as those paid in other Canadian National Railway operated hotels; if so, when will the new rates come into effect, and will they be retroactive to October 1, 1949. The answer is that if and when the Newfoundland hotel is entrusted to the Canadian National Railways, negotiations will be entered into with the authorized representatives of the employees of the Newfoundland hotel for the purpose of reaching an agreement as to wages and working conditions.
