1. What is the approximate amount of the claim of the Dominion against the province of Ontario, under the Indian Treaty number three (referred to in the report of the Deputy Minister of Finance for 1900, up to the 31st December, 1901 ?
2. At what dates were the claim of the Dominion and the answer of the province filed with the arbitrators 2
3- Are any steps being taken to have the matter determined ?
The MINISTER OF FINANCE (Hon. W.
S. Fielding) :
1. No claim has been filed by the Dominion made up to the date named in the honourable gentleman's question. The approximate amount of the claim of the Dominion against the province is $322,000, which, with interest up to the time of the filing of the claim by the Dominion, made then an approximate claim of $475,000.
2. Claim of the Dominion filed 18th October, 1893 ; answer of the province of Ontario filed 6th November, 1895.
3. The claim was brought before the arbitrators by the Dominion and postponed at the request of the Ontario government. Subsequently a date for hearing was fixed, but owing to the illness of one of the arbitrators the case was not proceeded with. An application will shortly be made for a further hearing.
