I may tell the Postmaster General that the case I had in view was not a hypothetical one. I had not made up my mind whether I would make any charge or not. I wanted to know what the position would likely be before I moved.

I would like to refer to the question of the salaries of rural postmasters. I think the Postmaster General might well discriminate between the class he refers to as farmers, who take the post office merely as an accommodation to their neighbours and distribute the mail matter among them, and the class of postmasters who keep the post offices in villages and small towns. As a matter of fact, these men in many cases, have no revenue except from the post office. Their remuneration, as the Postmaster Gen eral will admit-I remember he admitted it a year ago-is very small, ranging sometimes from $200 to $500 a year. Many of these provide a building for the accommodation of a post office and keep the place heated, yet receive no remuneration for
