Mr. E. O. Bertrand (Prescott):

Mr. Speaker, I should like to ask a question of the Secretary of State for External Affairs. On December 29 last an Ottawa newspaper, Le Droit, made public the text of a telegram addressed by His Excellency Archbishop Vachon to the Prime Minister urging the Canadian government to protest to the government of Hungary against the arrest of Cardinal Mindszenty. Will the Secretary of State for External Affairs let the house know whether any action has been taken by the government in this connection?

Mr. BERTRAND (Prescott):

Rising to a question of privilege, Mr. Chairman, may I say that the hon. member for Cape Breton South a moment ago, in order to strengthen his argument in favour of the check-off

I do not blame him for trying to strengthen his argument-said that even religious institutions were using the check-off, and he mentioned the Catholic church and said that it was requesting the check-off. May I say in reply that the Catholic church never requests any named contribution from any one of its adherents. I think it is only fair to the Catholic church that this correction be now made.
