Mr. WALSH:

-despite the fact that during the past year we had a deficit on the Canadian National Railways of approximately $54,000,000 which had to be paid out of the public treasury. Also we have to take into account the fact that the Canadian National Railways serve a very much larger territory than the Canadian Pacific, having a few thousand more miles of line, yet we have this discrepancy. It does not appeal to me as good policy or good economy on the part of the post office. There may be some good and sufficient reason for it. I am not sufficiently versed in the details to know; but I wish the minister could give this committee any good and sufficient reason that exists for the difference between the amount of business given by the government to the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific, having in mind the fact that the Canadian National has more mileage in Canada than the Canadian Pacific and other facts of that kind.
