Mr. McCusker:

The Department of National Health and Welfare is working in close co-operation with the world health organization in the early recognition of clinical influenza and the detection of the particular strain of virus prevalent during an epidemic of this disease. The advance notice of the presence of influenza in one or more countries is, of course, most important, as it is hoped that other countries will then have sufficient time to produce and administer vaccine containing the current strain of influenza. In this way, key personnel and particularly susceptible individuals may be protected. Influenza vaccine is only effective where the current strain or a closely associated strain of virus is included in the vaccine.

This winter the Department of National Health and Welfare is co-operating with the Department of National Defence in establishing a field trial to assess the protective value of influenza vaccine. About 7,000 doses of vaccine including some control material have been distributed across Canada. These have been allocated by provincial health officers to industrial groups, hospital staffs, etc., and by the Department of National Defence to various R.C.A.F. stations. As this vaccine contains a strain of influenza virus which is similar to the current strain now prevalent in other countries, it is expected that this trial will provide an accurate evaluation of the protective qualities of influenza vaccine.
